Anytune is one of the best-regarded music practice apps there is: 4.8 stars from thousands of reviews, a decade of development, and a feature list that goes far beyond "slow it down". If you own an iPhone, iPad or Mac and you're happy to pay, it's a very good buy.
The catch is in that sentence. Anytune is Apple-only. There is no Anytune for Windows, no Anytune for Android, nothing for Linux or Chromebooks. And once you add up Pro+, the Mac version and the export add-on, it isn't cheap either.
This article is for the musicians Anytune leaves out, and for anyone who'd rather not pay for a slow downer. Music Slow Downer is a free, browser-based tool that covers the core of what Anytune does. Below is an honest comparison, including the places where Anytune is still ahead.

Where Music Slow Downer Wins
1. It runs on the computer you actually have
This is the whole reason most people land on this page. If you practise at a Windows PC, an Android phone or a Chromebook, Anytune simply isn't an option. Music Slow Downer is a web page: it works wherever Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge works, and the same URL follows you from laptop to phone.
2. It costs nothing, with nothing held back
Anytune's free tier is genuinely usable, but the features people buy it for sit behind Pro+, the Mac app is a separate purchase, and exporting a slowed-down track is another add-on on top. Music Slow Downer has one version, it's free, and loop export is part of it.
3. It can practise along with anything playing in your browser
Anytune, like every app that plays your library, can't touch DRM-protected audio, so songs from a streaming subscription are off limits. Music Slow Downer sidesteps that on desktop: click π΅ Record Tab Audio, pick the tab, tick "Share audio", and the section you play is captured and loaded with full speed, pitch and loop control. It works for lessons on video sites as well as music.
4. Nothing to install, nothing uploaded
Files are decoded and processed in your browser. There is no account, no upload, and no library to manage. Drop a file, practise, close the tab.
Where Anytune Is Still Ahead
We'd rather you pick the right tool than ours, so here's the other side.
- Deeper slow-down. Anytune goes to 0.05Γ; we stop at 0.25Γ. In practice almost nobody rehearses below 0.4Γ (the feel disappears), but for forensic transcription Anytune has more headroom.
- Finer pitch control. Anytune shifts Β±24 semitones with fine tuning between them. Music Slow Downer shifts Β±12 in whole semitones, which covers transposing to a different key or matching a down-tuned guitar, but not a recording that's 20 cents sharp.
- Real instrument isolation. ReFrameβ’ can solo or mute a vocal or instrument. Our frequency-focus presets narrow the audio to the band where your part lives, which is enough to pick out a bass line or a guitar part, but they don't remove the other instruments.
- Practice-session tooling. Step-it-Up loop trainer, count-in, playlists, scrolling lyrics and TAB, recording yourself. Music Slow Downer deliberately stays simple; if you want a full practice environment, Anytune is the more complete product.
Who Should Use Which?
- You're on Windows, Android, Linux or a Chromebook β Music Slow Downer. Anytune isn't available to you.
- You want to practise with streaming or YouTube audio β Music Slow Downer on a desktop browser.
- You're a student or teacher who needs a free tool to recommend β Music Slow Downer. No purchase, no sign-up, works on school Chromebooks.
- You're on iPhone/iPad/Mac and want isolation, trainers and playlists β Anytune Pro+, and it's worth the money.
- You're on Apple and only ever need slow-down, loop and pitch β try Music Slow Downer first; it may be all you need.
π‘ The 60-second test
- Open Music Slow Downer on whatever device you're reading this on.
- Drop in an MP3, or hit Record Tab Audio on desktop.
- Drag Speed to 0.70Γ, press [ and ] around a hard bar, press L.
If that loop does what you need, you've just saved the price of Anytune. If you find yourself wanting fine-tune or isolation, you now know exactly why you'd pay for it.
Other Anytune Alternatives
- Amazing Slow Downer β the long-running desktop and mobile app. Windows and Mac versions exist, but it's paid. See our full Amazing Slow Downer comparison.
- Transcribe! β a paid desktop app (Windows, Mac, Linux) focused on transcription, with excellent slow-down quality.
- Audacity β free and cross-platform, but slowing down means rendering an effect, not real-time playback, and looping a section is clunky.
- YouTube's playback speed β fixed steps, no loop, no pitch, no export. Fine for a listen, not for practice. Our guide to slowing down music for practice explains what you actually need.
